This is the Tricky Part: When Directions Become Difficult
Prof. Stephen C. Hirtle, School of Information Sciences,
University of Pittsburgh
Automated route guidance systems, both web-based systems and en-route systems, have become commonplace in recent years. These systems often replace human-generated directions, which can be incomplete and vague. However, there are benefits to human-generated directions, including the ability to differentiate between easy and complex steps through language. In this talk, differences between human-generated and machine-generated instructions for wayfinding, in both the built and natural environment, will be discussed. A detailed analysis of when authors flag some directional steps as being particularly "tricky" leads to a number of suggestions for improving the next generation of automated route guidance systems.
