Geda Paulsen:
”Bossy” causative verbs in Finnish:
Power abuse and social attitudes lexicalized in the derived causative verbs
Abstract
There is a group of morphological causatives in Finnish that activate a
construction when the root verb is a motion verb. I call this construction
a power misusing –construction. The characteristics of this construction is
that the first (animate) argument controls the action of the second (animate)
argument, and in addition, the action of the second argument is done in vain.
In my analysis I use the methods of conceptual semantics to describe activity
and dominance between the arguments and to give a formal description of the
power misusing–construction. The emphasis of the analysis lies on the action
tier.
